Shape Memory Recording Device

For recording the shape memory behavior of the NiTi bi-layer composite we needed a device with the capability of heating and cooling the samples periodically. For this purpose, electric resistance heating and thermoelectric cooling were used. An automatic timer key was employed for keying on-off the system periodically. Applying electrical current to the sample, heats them as a resistant and in the following, a thermoelectric semiconductor with the Peltier effect, decrease their temperature. The Peltier effect is creating temperature difference (50-70°C) between two junctions of a semiconductor by applying a voltage. One side of the semiconductor sink the heat to the other side and become cool, and the other side becomes warm. For increasing the efficiency, the heat should be removed from the warm side; otherwise, the semiconductors are going to burn after a while. Therefore a water circulation system was designed. Two different power supply for providing and a Rheostat for adjusting the electrical current were used.

Finally, When a sample actuates on the Shape Memory Recording device periodically, a digital camera recorded its behavior.
