Butterfly was presented in annual exhibition of Tehran University 2015.

Opening and closing the wings by on-off keying modulation.

The wings flap by NiTi Bi-layer composite arms.
Butterfly
To show the ability of two-way shape memory actuation of NiTi bi-layer composite, a butterfly shaped structure was designed with NiTi bi-layer composite arms. When the actuators, which are located under the wings of the butterfly, heated by electric current, recover their straight initial shapes and cause the wings to move upward. As the electrical current is interrupted, the temperature decreases and causes the actuators provide a bent and the wings move downward subsequently. The electrical current modulates on-off keying periodically with an automatic timer key; therefore, the wings flap continually.
The body and wings of the butterfly were made of copper which has high thermal conductivity and helps in heat sinking faster; as a result, the frequency response of actuators increases.
